Functional exercises are exercises, that involves training the body for performing the activities in daily life better. Physical therapists developed exercises on the lines of activities, which are done at home or at work, so that the patients can return back to their normal lives after an injury or surgery. It usually involves weight bearing activities, which target the core muscles of the abdomen, lower back, etc. These activities aim at helping the patients perform the activities more easily and without injury. There is some exercise equipment which is used for functional exercises, namely cable machines, dumbbells, medicinal balls, exercise balls, resistance tubes, balance disks, sandbags, etc.

Functional Exercise Training

Although functional exercises were designed for better daily movements, these exercises can also be done by healthy individuals, as these exercises will also help in daily movements and the individual will be able to get the most out of his body. Let’s see what are the functional exercises, which can easily be done without going to the gym or any fitness center.

Push Ups
They are wonderful functional exercises for shoulders. These exercises also help in firming the chest, arms, abs and back as well. You can start off with the wall push ups and then after some practice, you can make use of the kitchen counter for added intensity. You may want to read more on chest exercises at home.

Place your hand on the wall or on kitchen counter a little wider than your shoulder width.

Your feet should be placed about 1 feet away from the wall (1 ½ feet away from the kitchen counter) and keep hip width distance between your feet.

Now slowly without lifting your feet or moving your hands, push your torso towards the wall.

Hold in the position and return back to the starting position. You will be able to do approximately 8 to 10 push ups, while you wait for your food to warm up in the microwave.

Squats
Most of the actions we do through the whole day like reaching, lifting, bending involve an element of squatting or lunging. The functional exercises for legs are the squats. They help in strengthening the knees, quadriceps and the gluteal muscles. Do you want to read more on thigh exercises without equipment.

Stand with a shoulder width distance between your feet and keep your hands at shoulder level.

Slowly lower your torso, so that your thighs and feet are perpendicular to each other.

Make sure, when you come down in the position, your knees do not protrude further than your toes. You may want to read more on thigh exercises without weights.

Back Extension
Back pain is chronically a problem with a number of people. This is very true of our elders. To relieve yourself of the back pain, back extension is not only one of the functional exercises for seniors but also for the young. This exercise helps in strengthening the back muscles and it also helps in releasing the tension, which mounts on the cervical disc. Read more on back strengthening exercises?

Lie face down on the floor and place your hands besides your body.

Slowly lift your chest off the floor, but make sure you do not use your hands for support.

Do not strain your neck but keep it straight, use the back muscles.

Hold in the position for 5 seconds and come back to the starting position and repeat.

Lunges
This is one of the functional exercises for runners. It retains the bending habits and gives free leg and back exercises at the same time. Doing this exercise properly helps in preventing back and knee pain. Read more on leg exercises at home.

Stand erect with your feet apart. Slowly slide one foot behind you, but make sure, your foot is placed straight and not turned out.

Tuck the hips, so that the back is not arched and there is a considerable stretch on the back and hip.

Bend your knees, so that your knees dip to the floor, but do not touch the floor.

When you are bending your knees, make sure, the knee of the front foot is over the ankle.

Remember that functional exercises are not the normal exercises, which you repeat 12 to 15 times. When you are doing the exercise, you should concentrate the effects which the exercise has on different body parts. This will help in strengthening the respective muscles and also prevent any injury.

As an ordinary citizen of your country, are you satisfied with the health care system of your country? Some may answer yes and some will disagree. However, the answer lies with the majority who may be satisfied or dissatisfied with the health care system in their respective country. It is very interesting to note as to which country takes concrete steps to keep its citizens hale and hearty. But, to decide which is the best health care in the world? The World Health Organization (WHO) is the best judge. If you too are interested in knowing where your country figures in the rankings of best health care in the world list by WHO, then read on.

Who Has the Best Health Care in the World?

One of the most important questions to be asked, who has the best health care in the world, has answers that reflect the overall health of the country. The best healthcare system in the world is that of France. This is a country that has a population of over 65 million people, has a government expenditure of over 250 billion USD, for the welfare of the health of its citizens.

France takes many precautions to ensure that its citizens stay healthy under all conditions. They have made it compulsory for each and every citizen to have an individual health insurance. They have even planned out the insurance for its citizens. The citizens of France have to pay about 5.25% of their salary or any earned income to the non-profit health insurance fund. Those on pensions or other benefits, like allowance, need to pay about 3.95% to the same for anaffordable health insurance fund.

Citizens of France can enjoy many benefits of this health insurance. Most of the time, the health care treatment is almost free for people. Let me explain, suppose someone visits a doctor and pays the doctors about USD 1500 as fees. He pays the doctor his fees and then claims a 75% refund from the health insurance fund. Thus, he will get back USD 1125 from the national insurance fund. If this same person also has a private health insurance plan, he can claim the remaining $325 and pay nothing from his own pocket.

The only thing one needs to remember is to pay first, then claim. A patient needs to pay from his own pocket after receiving treatment and only then claim the refund. Therefore, if you cannot afford to pay more, you should avoid seeking treatment from expensive hospitals. As compared to the United States, France spends USD 4,000 dollars per person for healthcare. United States on other hand, spends USD 7,500 per person. There are about 3.4 physicians per 1000 people in France and 2.4 physicians per 1000 people in the United States. This shows that both these countries provide the best health care in the world. This was all about the best health care system in the world. Let us now see how other countries fare on the best health care in the world list.

For senior citizens, above 65 years of age and for those who are covered under social security benefit plans or for those who are disabled, medicare benefits are definitely one of the most beneficial forms of health insurance.

Medicare Eligibility Requirements

There are various requirements an individual must satisfy before one can obtain medicare benefits. These medicare eligibility rules are related to age, nationality, work experience and various other conditions. Nevertheless, since its inception in 1965, medicare eligibility criterias have gone through major changes and have been modified in various forms. This creates a lot of confusion among people as to what are the various medicare eligibility parameters. Here, I’ll discuss various medicare eligibility rules.

Medicare Eligibility Age
Senior citizens above 65 years of age are eligible for medicare benefits. Generally, age for medicare eligibility can be less than 65 years however, for that to happen, the individual must be disabled and must have received Social security disability (SSD) benefits for at least 10 years. In many cases, individuals receiving Railroad Retirement payments are also eligible for medicare benefits. Besides that, people with diseases like major kidney problems or end stage renal diseases qualify for medicare eligibility, even if they’re below 65 years of age.

Medicare Eligibility Nationality
Only those individuals are entitled for medicare eligibility who have been US citizens for at least five years before applying for this program. Non Americans who have gained US citizenship at least five years before applying for this health insurance plan, are also eligible for these benefits.

Medicare Eligibility Types
There are different types of medicare eligibility that can you can apply for. All have their own benefits.
Type A: It consists of benefits for services received in hospitals.
Type B: This type covers charges received for services in home care and through outpatient.
Type C: Part C doesn’t provide any major coverage but it helps in getting some benefits from private insurers to get affordable health insurance.
Type D: Generally, the most popular type D eligibility, pays premiums for drugs and medicines, that are usually the most expensive part of health care management of senior citizens, as they rely heavily on medicines.
Medicare Eligibility for Spouse
If you or your spouse have worked for at least ten years and have directly paid some premiums into the medicare system, then after 65 you’ll be automatically eligible for medicare. In case of self employed people, these are paid through forms of various taxes.

Facts About Medicare

Medicare is the nation’s largest health insurance program and nearly 40 million senior and disabled Americans are insured under it. It is one of the most popular forms of individual health insurance plans. Generally, there are various issues related to medicare eligibility and requirements. For instance, there is no mention of qualifying disabilities on medicare website and so it leads to confusion among people.

People applying through disabilities are handled on individual basis and then it’s decided if they’re eligible for medicare or not. 3 months before one turns 65 years of age and those with approved disabilities must apply through phone, mail or online for medicare benefits. After 7 months of turning 65, you’re generally not allowed to apply for medicare benefits.

Enrollment lasts from Jan 1 to March 31, every year. It is advisable to enroll during enrollment period as that helps to get better premiums. With an average premium of US$ 96.40, in the year 2009, the premiums are subject to change every year. Visiting the medicare website can give you more information about updated medicare eligibility rules and criteria. The medicare eligibility providers are private or public agencies recommended by governmental agencies and you can visit medicare website and offices to get the contact number of various medicare providers.

Whey protein is a fusion of globular proteins that can be separated from whey. Whey Protein is known to be a very rich source of amino acids and it contains minimal fats and cholesterol. Initially, whey protein was considered a waste product obtained while making cheese, until its nutritional properties were discovered. It was a common myth that whey protein is beneficial only for the athletes, bodybuilders and sportsmen. Today, whey protein is gaining popularity among people of all ages due to its varied nutritional and health benefits. Lets have a look at some of the health benefits of whey protein.

Nutritional Benefits
Whey protein contains high levels of amino acids like essential amino acids (EAAs), branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) like leucine and cysteine. EAAs and BCCAs in whey protein help in the maintenance of muscle tissues and protein synthesis by the body. Leucine plays an important role in the protein synthesis and muscle growth. It is hence considered to be very essential for the athletes and bodybuilders. Cysteine is essential for the production of glutathione in the body. Glutathione is an anti-oxidant that is known to have anti-cancer properties and it also boosts the immune system. Whey protein provides quick nourishment to the muscles and is therefore referred to as ‘fast protein’.

Health Benefits
Whey protein is known to play an important role in weight loss and weight management, maintaining cardiovascular health, providing nourishment to cancer patients, improving memory, infant nourishment and aging healthily.

Weight Loss and Weight Management: Whey protein contains minimal fat and cholesterol and is consumed as a pre-exercise meal. Studies have proved that the amino acids present in whey protein help improvise the body composition while promoting loss of fat from the body. It has bioactive components that reduce appetite and burn down fats.

Nourishment for Cancer Patients: Whey protein provides the essential nourishment that cancer patients require, but are not able to gain due to loss of appetite and side effects of cancer treatments. It is soluble, easily digested and easily absorbed by the body, which proves to be very beneficial to cancer patients. It is also said to prevent the growth of cancerous tumors and boost the immune systemsof cancer patients.

Memory Improvement: Studies show that whey protein improves memory, cognitive performance and performance under stress.

Cardiovascular Health: Inclusion of whey protein in daily diet is known to have reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disorders. It also helps combat high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, thereby preventing many kinds of cardiovascular disorders.

Diabetes: Whey protein helps combat Type 2 diabetes, as it is high in biological value. People suffering from type 2 diabetes can include whey protein in their diets to control blood sugar levels.

Infant Nourishment: Whey protein is being included in infant food formulas, as it is essential for their healthy growth and development.

Black mold is a common form of fungus infestation which is capable of inducing several health hazards among human beings. This form of fungus mostly thrives in places having humidity more than 55%. Dry walls, carpet, wall paper, fiber-board, ceiling tiles, thermal insulation etc. serve as a favorable habitat for black mold. The toxic variety of black mold is called as Stachybotrys Chartarum (atra).

The hazardous health effects of black mold are due to a toxic substance called mycotoxin, which is a byproduct of black mold. Mycotoxin is a light weight spore and is often termed as a secondary growth of black mold. These toxic substances enter human body through skin contact or via breathing. Open cuts or sores also provide an entry point to the mycotoxin. This mycotoxin is also circulated throughout the house, by the means of air conditioning systems, fans etc. Black mold health risks are dependent upon the severity of infestation and the type of individual. However, the group of individuals most prone to serious black mold health effects includes:

Infants and children.

Elderly people

People with weak immune system.

Pregnant women.

Individuals with medical history of allergic reactions or respiratory disorders.

The severity of symptoms also vary from person to person. Moreover, black mold health risks also differ according to the species of the black mold. However, the common health hazards of all the toxic black mold species include:

Irritation of Mucus Membrane
Primary or secondary metabolisms of fungus produce Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), which are released in the air for humans to inhale. The inhalation of VOCs results in the accumulation of mycotoxins in the lungs, which circulate throughout the body. The typical moldy smell of black mold infestation is often the resultant of these byproducts. These compounds cause irritation of mucus membrane and induce effects such as headaches, decreased attention span, difficulty in concentration and dizziness. VOCs also affect the central nervous system of the human beings.

Allergies
Mold often causes severe allergic response, amongst individuals who have a weak immune system. Though, the allergic symptoms may not be threatening, they are sufficient to ruin the quality of life of an individual. The allergic symptoms of black mold range from runny nose, itchy-watery eyes, coughing, sneezing, throat irritation to more severe chronic conditions such as sinusitis and asthma. The severity of allergic symptoms depend upon the amount of mold infestation as well as the immune system of an individual.

Invasive Disease
The diseases such as HIV/AIDS, cancer often render a weak immune system amongst the individuals. These individuals then become a soft target for various diseases. Black mold causes opportunistic infection, among the individuals with weak immune systems. Opportunistic infection, is the infection caused due to micro-organisms which are capable of infecting people, with suppressed immune system only, but are unable to do so in healthy individuals. Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Mucor and Rhizopus are some common fungi that cause invasive disease.

Number of tests are conducted to affirm the exposure to toxic black mold. These tests include:

The measurement of white blood cell counts: If the number of T-lymphocytes in the body exceeds the normal count, there is a chance of possible toxic mold exposure. More number of T- lymphocytes indicate the hyper activity of immune system to combat the exposure.

The Spirometric test: This test is conducted to detect the exposure of mold by examining the lung function. Decreased capacity to function in a normal manner, indicates possible exposure to mold.

The skin prick tests: Involves a series of tests conducted by skin pricking the patient with a sample of various molds to detect which of the molds induces allergic reaction. This test is not always conclusive.

You can also check for toxic black mold health risks by keeping a watch on the allergic symptoms and also by looking out for the infestation in obvious areas in your house. Always try to keep your home and surroundings clean, so as to avoid any toxic black mold infestation. This infestation is very difficult to completely get rid of and it also tends to grow quickly even it has been destroyed. Hence, consistent attempts should be made to keep your house free of mold infestation.
